Ads Library vs Paid Ad Spy Tools: What $49 to $459 a Month Actually Buys Over the Free Version
Paid ad spy tools store the Meta Ads Library's public data and add history, sorting and alerts. Below a few hundred dollars a day, the free library checked weekly is enough.
Every ad spy tool is built on the same public data the Meta Ads Library shows for free. What you pay for is history, sorting and alerts. This compares the free library against four paid tools at their September 2026 prices, and says which kind of advertiser gets their money back.
Every tool in this comparison is downstream of the Ads Library. They do not have data the library lacks; they have the library's data stored, sorted and searched better. Whether that is worth paying for depends on one question: how many brands do you watch, and how often.
1. What the free library cannot do
Four things the library refuses, all of which the tools sell:
| The library does not | Which means | A paid tool does |
|---|---|---|
| Sort by how long an ad has run | You convert start dates by hand | One click: longest-running first |
| Keep anything past a year | Last year's winners are gone | 2-3 years of history on the better tools |
| Alert you | You remember to check | Email when a tracked brand launches or stops an ad |
| Search all advertisers at once by creative attribute | One Page at a time | "Video ads under 15 seconds in the beauty category launched this week" |
The fifth thing, spend, no tool has either. Any tool that shows a spend number for a commercial ad is estimating from impressions and engagement, and should say so.
2. Four tools at September 2026 prices
Prices checked 2026-09-13 on each vendor's pricing page or, where the page blocks automated reading, on two independent reviews dated 2026; they change often, so treat them as bands.
| Tool | Entry price / month | Top price / month | What the tiers gate | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BigSpy | $9 (20 queries/day) | $99 unlimited; $249 for 5 seats | Daily query count, downloads, tracked ads | Meta, TikTok, Google, YouTube, more |
| Minea | $49 | $199 | AI analyses per month (10 / 50 / unlimited), shop alerts | Meta and influencer placements; TikTok announced |
| Foreplay | $59 | $459 (10 seats) | Brands tracked by its Spyder module (15 / 50), seats | Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts |
| AdSpy | $149 flat | $149 | Nothing; one plan, 100k ad views a month | Meta only |
Three things the price table hides:
- The cheap tiers are metered. BigSpy's $9 buys 20 searches a day, which is one competitor's Page and two keyword ideas before it stops. The tools become useful at the unlimited tier, so compare $99, $199, $175 and $149, not the entry prices.
- Seats are the real price for agencies. Foreplay's $175 tier includes 5 users and $20 each beyond; a 12-person creative team is $315 a month before the plan is chosen.
- Depth and breadth are opposites. AdSpy keeps the deepest Meta archive and covers nothing else; BigSpy covers six platforms with a shallower history on each. Nobody offers both.
3. Who gets the money back
We run the free library for our own account monitoring and have paid for two of the tools above at different times. The break-even is about the number of brands, not the ad budget:
| You | Free library | Paid tool |
|---|---|---|
| Watch 1-3 competitors, check weekly | Enough. 20 minutes a week with saved search links | Money spent for convenience |
| Watch 10+ brands or a whole category | Painful; you will stop doing it | Pays for itself in the first month |
| Need last year's seasonal creatives | Impossible | The only way |
| Build a swipe file with a team | Screenshots in a folder | Foreplay-type tools exist for exactly this |
| Dropshipping product research | Wrong tool; the library is per-Page | Minea-type tools are built around it |
The honest summary: a spy tool replaces discipline, not data. If you will not open the free library weekly, you will not open the paid one either, and the subscription becomes a monthly reminder of a habit you do not have.
4. What none of them can tell you
- Whether the ad made money. Days running is the proxy, in the free library and in every tool. A 200-day ad from a brand with a $40 average order is a different signal from a 200-day ad selling a $2,000 course, and no tool knows the margin.
- The audience. Outside the EU, targeting is invisible everywhere; see the API guide for why the EU is different.
- What to do with it. The four-step reading method in section 5 of the Ads Library guide is the same whether the data comes from the free page or a $459 dashboard.
Before paying for any of them, do the free version for a month. If you kept the habit and hit its limits, you now know exactly which limit, and that decides which tool.
Our own setup: 4 competitor Pages saved as search links, 20 minutes every Monday, an 11-column sheet from the swipe file guide. From March to June 2026 we paid for a $99 plan and cancelled after 3 months, not because the tool was bad but because none of its alerts ever changed an ad we ran. With 4 brands, alerts are noise; with 40 they are signal. If you run $50 to $300 a day against 3 to 5 competitors, the saved $99 a month is roughly one ad account with a Page, which is what is actually missing when an ad will not launch.

FAQ
Where do ad spy tools get their data?
From the same public Ads Library everyone can open, plus scraping and, for EU ads, the official API. None of them see spend or audience data for commercial ads; those do not exist publicly.
What does a paid tool add over the free library?
History beyond one year, sorting by how long an ad has run, alerts when a tracked brand launches or stops an ad, saved collections, transcripts of video ads, and search across the whole library instead of one Page at a time.
How much do they cost?
At September 2026 prices: BigSpy from $9 a month (20 queries a day) to $99 unlimited, Minea $49 to $199, Foreplay $59 to $459, AdSpy $149 flat. Most add per-seat charges.
Is a spy tool worth it for a small advertiser?
Usually not. Below a few hundred dollars a day, the questions you need answered (what runs longest, what offer, which landing page) are answered by the free library in 20 minutes a week. The tools pay off when you track many brands or need history.
Which tool is best?
Depends on the job: BigSpy for cheap volume search across platforms, Foreplay for saving and organizing creatives with a team, Minea for product research in dropshipping, AdSpy for the deepest Meta archive. None is best at everything.
Can a spy tool get my account banned?
Using one does not affect your ad account; the tools read public data. Building your own scraper against Meta's pages can get the scraping account or IP blocked, which is a different thing.
Do spy tools cover TikTok?
Partly. Most started with Meta and added TikTok later, and TikTok's public data is a leaderboard rather than a full library, so coverage is thinner. See the Creative Center guide for what TikTok exposes.
