How to Build an Ad Swipe File From the Ads Library in 30 Minutes a Week
A swipe file is your own classified set of reference ads from the free Meta Ads Library: 30 minutes a week, 3 to 5 competitors, keep only ads past 60 days, file by offer, opening, format and landing page.
The biggest free ad swipe file already exists: it is the Meta Ads Library. What people lack is a way to keep what they find. This gives a folder structure, a four-column classification table, a weekly routine, and the data from our 12-brand check to set the "worth keeping" threshold.
People who search for an ad creative library want a site full of reference ads. It exists, free, and it is the Ads Library. The problem was never a shortage of ads to look at; it is that people look, do not save, save without classifying, and never go back. This is only about the keeping.
1. Keep one kind of ad: over 60 days running
The first mistake is keeping ads that look good. Looks have nothing to do with results, and the library gives a free result signal: the start date. Advertisers do not keep paying for losing ads, so anything still active after 60 days is a structure validated with real money. The swipe file keeps that kind and nothing else.
The threshold is not a guess. On 2026-09-13 we checked the page-one ads of 12 Taiwanese brands: the six retailers had a median of 133 days running, the six service brands 25; the share of retailer page-one ads past 90 days ran from 25% (books.com.tw) to 86% (PChome). A 60-day line drops a third to a half of retail ads and about 80% of service ads; what survives is worth keeping. The full data is in section 5 of the Ads Library guide.
2. The four-column table
One spreadsheet, one row per ad, fixed columns, do not add more:
| Column | What goes in | Options |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | Page name | - |
| Start date | The library's start date | YYYY-MM-DD |
| Capture date | The day you logged it | YYYY-MM-DD |
| Days | Capture minus start | Computed |
| Offer | The reason to act | % off / amount off / free shipping / limited time / gift / social proof / none |
| Opening | What the first 3 seconds or first line does | Question / pain / number / contrast / demo / celebrity / straight price |
| Format | Asset type | Image / video / carousel / meme (big text on image) / text |
| Landing page | Type of page the click reaches | Product / campaign / lead form / one-pager / app store |
| Versions | "This ad has N versions" | Number |
| Screenshot | Filename | brand_startdate_offer.png |
| One line | Why it has run this long, your judgement | Free text |
The four bold columns are the point. After three months you are not looking at 50 ads; you are counting how often "free shipping + demo + video + product page" appears. That combination is what can be copied.
3. The 30-minute weekly routine
- Monday, 10 minutes. Open your 3 to 5 saved search links, one per competitor, Page search, status active, your country. Scan only page one's start dates; page one is the highest-impression slice and has already been filtered for you.
- 15 minutes. Anything new past 60 days goes in the table. Do not read it closely yet; fill the four columns and take the screenshot.
- 5 minutes. Check last week's rows against the library. For anything that ended, write "ran N days, ended" in the one-line column. That is more informative than a launch: it tells you the lifespan of that structure.
Step 3 is the one people skip and the one that pays. In our sheet for one Taiwanese retailer, a "limited-time free shipping with countdown" ad ended on day 74 and a "gift with purchase" ad launched the same day to the same landing page. That pair is a public A/B result: free shipping lived 74 days and gift took over. Without step 3 you see two unrelated ads.
4. Using it after three months
Past 40 rows, filter by offer and count; then by opening. You get the two or three combinations most common in your category. For your first ad, do not pick the most creative row, pick the most frequent one: that is the structure the whole market voted for with its budgets. Creativity is for the second ad, once you have your own numbers.
Copy structure, not assets. TikTok gets its own sheet from the Creative Center, with CTR percentile and 3-second retention replacing the days column; the two platforms' creatives look different enough that one sheet contaminates itself.
5. A swipe file is the last step; the account is the first
Plenty of people build the file for three months, copy the structure, make the ad, and then cannot run it: no Page, no ad account, verification demanded on the first launch. The creative is the last step; the account is the first, and doing them in the wrong order wastes the three months. The four layers a first campaign needs are in the complete Facebook ads guide; the assembled version is the first-run bundle.

FAQ
What is an ad swipe file?
A personal library of ads you saved and classified so you have a direction the next time you make a creative. The classification is the point; a folder of screenshots is never opened again after three months.
Where do the ads come from?
The Meta Ads Library, free, no login, every Page. For TikTok, the Creative Center leaderboard. Paid spy tools add history and sorting, not different ads.
Which ads should I keep?
Only ads that have run more than 60 days and are still active. Advertisers do not keep paying for losers; two months of spend is a validated structure. A new ad that looks good is worthless; it may be gone in a week.
How do I classify them?
Four columns: offer (percent off, amount off, free shipping, limited time, gift, social proof), opening (question, pain, number, contrast, demo), format (image, video, carousel, meme, text), landing page type (product, campaign, lead form, one-pager). Plus brand, start date and capture date.
Is copying from a swipe file plagiarism?
Copy the structure, not the asset. The same "demo in the first three seconds plus free shipping" built with your product, footage and copy is learning. Using someone else's image or video is the problem.
How long does it take each week?
Thirty minutes: open 3 to 5 saved search links, scan page one's start dates, add anything new past 60 days. Roughly 40 to 60 entries after three months.
What tool do I keep it in?
A spreadsheet and a screenshot folder. Name screenshots brand_startdate_offer and put the filename in the sheet. Paid tools are for teams.
