Meta Verified and the Blue Tick: Three Badges That Look Identical, Priced Completely Differently
The blue tick across Meta's apps is three different things. On Instagram and Facebook it is Meta Verified, a paid subscription (Meta lists individual plans from about USD 14.99/month) with no notability review. On WhatsApp it is the Official Business Account badge, free from Meta but approved on brand notability, and its submission route has been suspended since August 2025. A "ready-made verified account" stays tied to the original owner's identity. Work out which one you are looking at before you try to get it.
The blue tick on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp looks like one thing. It is three, and they could not be more different: one is a subscription you just pay for, one is a free business badge you have to be approved for, and one is an account someone sells you that never actually becomes yours. This page helps you tell which one you are looking at before you spend money on the wrong one.
The blue tick on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp looks like one symbol, so almost everyone opens with the same question: how much is the blue tick. That question cannot be answered directly, because the blue tick is three different things. How you get it, what it costs, whether you can be rejected, and whether it can be bought are all different depending on which one you mean.
Ask the wrong version and every guide you find afterwards will contradict the last one, because each is describing a different badge. So this page does not teach you how to get one. It first helps you identify which one you are holding, then sends you to the right guide.
1. Three badges, one symbol
Start with this table. It is the map for the whole topic, and once it clicks, most of the confusion dissolves.
| Where you see the blue tick | What it actually is | How you get it | Cost | Can it be rejected? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram account | Meta Verified subscription | Self-serve in-app plus identity check | ~USD 14.99/mo and up | Almost never (subscription, not a review) |
| Facebook profile / Page | Meta Verified subscription (same system) | Same, usually bundled with IG at a discount | ~USD 14.99/mo and up | Almost never |
| WhatsApp API account | Official Business Account (OBA), the old green tick | Submitted to Meta through a BSP | Free via the official route | Yes, and most people fail |
| A "ready-made verified account" for sale | Someone else's account | Purchase | Whatever the seller charges | — Not advisable, see section 5 |
The official definitions line up against this table: Meta documents the badge types and how each is judged in the Facebook Help Centre entry on verified badge types, and the WhatsApp Official Business Account eligibility and review flow in the Meta for Developers OBA documentation.
Three things settle immediately from this table:
- Instagram and Facebook share one subscription (Meta Verified). You pay and you have it; there is no review to fail. What you pay is a monthly fee, not a "verification fee".
- WhatsApp's blue tick is a different animal: it is a free business badge, but it is reviewed, and what stops people is notability, not paperwork.
- "Green turning blue" requires you to do nothing. Meta only standardised the WhatsApp badge colour. Accounts that already had a green tick turn blue on their own, no reapplication, no fee.
2. Which one should you actually get
Do not start from "how do I get it". Start from "what problem am I solving". A badge is not the goal; it solves exactly one problem: making the people who see you believe you are the real person or the official account. If that is not your problem, you may not need one at all.
| Your situation | What you want | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| I am being impersonated on Instagram, or my name is easy to copy | Instagram Meta Verified | IG / FB |
| I want to look more credible in the IG / FB feed | Meta Verified (read what it does not do first) | IG / FB |
| Customers reach me on WhatsApp and I want my brand name shown, not a number | WhatsApp Official Business Account | |
| I need WhatsApp API broadcasting or a helpdesk integration | WhatsApp Official Business Account | |
| I just want to run Facebook ads | You need no badge at all | None |
That last row is worth calling out, because it is the most common mix-up: running Facebook ads does not require any blue tick. Ads are published in the name of a Facebook Page, and a Page runs ads without a verification badge. People bundle the two because "verified" sounds like a prerequisite for doing business properly. It is not. If ads are all you want, the complete Facebook ads guide is a separate track from badges.
3. Three misreadings that hold across all three
These three lines circulate everywhere, and they apply to all three badges, so clearing them up saves money up front.
"A blue tick lifts my reach." It does not. All three badges answer "is this the real person or account", not "is this content good". The algorithm does not push you more because you carry a tick. Spending the subscription fee as if it were ad budget is mistaking a trust tool for a performance tool.
"A blue tick means I get banned less." It does not. What keeps an account alive is behaviour and content: on Instagram, whether you break the rules; on WhatsApp, the number's quality rating and block rate. A badge is not immunity, and a badge obtained with false information is the fuse for a clawback.
"The blue tick is expensive, so it must be better." This conflates two badges. WhatsApp's official badge is free; the money you pay is either a Meta Verified subscription or an agency's fee, never "a more expensive badge". The free one is hard to qualify for; the paid one is only hard in the sense of deciding whether to keep paying.
4. Free versus paid, and where each one is hard
This is the cut that confuses everyone, and once it is clean the pricing questions answer themselves.
| Meta Verified (IG / FB) | WhatsApp Official Business Account | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Paid subscription | Business identity verification |
| Cost | ~USD 14.99/mo and up | Free through the official route |
| The hard part | Deciding whether to keep paying | Whether your brand has third-party press |
| Can it be rejected | Almost never | Yes, and lack of notability is the most common cause |
| If it stops | Badge removed | Removed only if the brand stops qualifying |
| Available now | Yes, any time | Submission route suspended since August 2025 |
Meta's page lists four individual tiers, at USD 14.99, 49.99, 149.99 and 499.99 per month; all four carry the same badge and differ only in account support and protection (Meta Verified official page). Subscribing to both Instagram and Facebook together usually takes about 20 percent off.
"Free" is not free of running cost either. Once WhatsApp is on the API it bills per conversation: in Hong Kong, for example, the first 1,000 service conversations each month are free and the rest fall between USD 0.03 and 0.09 each, with marketing conversations priced higher. So the badge is free but the API carrying it is an ongoing expense, and that belongs in the decision to go OBA.
The hard parts are mirror images. Meta Verified is easy to get; the hard part is deciding whether it is worth paying every month (most people only need the lowest tier). The WhatsApp badge costs nothing; the hard part is that it is judged on notability, the one thing you cannot fix by resubmitting documents, and in 2026 the submission door itself is shut.
Each spoke takes its own "hard half" all the way down: what the four Meta Verified tiers actually differ on and why most people should buy the cheapest, in the Instagram blue tick guide; the seven reasons WhatsApp submissions fail, which two cannot be fixed, and what to do while the door is closed, in the WhatsApp blue tick guide.
5. Why a "ready-made verified account" is a bad idea for all three
All three badges are sold ready-made by someone. The reason not to buy is structural rather than moral, and it is the same structure every time:
Verification binds to the original holder's identity, not to the account.
- The Instagram subscription binds to the person who passed the identity check, using their document.
- The WhatsApp OBA sits inside the seller's Business Manager; you are buying access, not ownership, and they can pull it back.
- With any of them, the moment something needs re-verification (a rename, an appeal, a report, a routine review), the person who has to step forward is the original owner, not you.
And you cannot quietly rename it into your own identity, because renaming triggers exactly the review you cannot pass. The account never actually becomes yours.
We do not sell these. The only badge-related service we handle is WhatsApp Official Business Account submission, and the terms are printed on the product page: you must already have a WABA, completed business verification, and a website consistent with your brand; all three or we do not take the order; a failed application is refunded in full to your wallet; and we do not submit falsified information. A submission that passes on false data gets clawed back later, the clawback reaches the whole Business Manager, and the complaint lands on us. If you need it, it is in the catalog under verification services.
6. Does your market need this badge
A badge is worth exactly as much as the platform it sits on matters to your customers. This section screens out the ones you do not need before you spend time on them.
| Your market | Meta Verified (IG / FB) | WhatsApp blue tick |
|---|---|---|
| India | Situational, worth it against impersonation | High, though your competitors have it too |
| Indonesia | Situational | Highest — locals search "jasa centang biru" and arrive comparing prices |
| Middle East / Malaysia / Singapore | Situational | High, business conversation lives on WhatsApp |
| Hong Kong | Situational | High, near-universal WhatsApp use |
| Taiwan / Japan / Korea | Only against impersonation | Low — conversation lives on LINE / KakaoTalk |
| US / Europe | Common for creators and brands | Lower, WhatsApp is not the primary business channel |
Two conclusions you can act on:
In WhatsApp-first markets the badge is a genuine trust signal at the point of sale. Indonesia is the most decisive: the demand there is unusually far down the funnel, people who already decided to get verified and are choosing who does it for them.
Where WhatsApp is not the channel your customers use, a verified WhatsApp account will not move your conversion rate, because they will never open that thread. In those markets, only the Meta Verified badge on the app your audience actually uses is worth pricing, and even then mainly if impersonation is a real risk.

A badge is not a prerequisite for doing business; it is one trust signal. Confirm that trust is actually the thing you are short on before spending time or money on it.

FAQ
Are Meta Verified and the WhatsApp blue tick the same thing?
No. Meta Verified is a paid subscription badge for Instagram and Facebook, charged monthly with no notability review. The WhatsApp blue tick is the Official Business Account badge, free from Meta but approved on brand notability. How you get them, what they cost, and whether you can be rejected are all opposite.
How much is the blue tick?
It depends which app. On Instagram and Facebook it is a Meta Verified subscription, so you always pay a monthly fee. On WhatsApp the official badge is free and the difficulty is eligibility, not money. So "how much is the blue tick" has to start with "on which platform".
How much does the Instagram blue tick cost?
Meta's page lists individual plans at about USD 14.99, 49.99, 149.99 and 499.99 per month, varying by region, with the real figure shown at checkout in the app. All four tiers carry the same badge; what changes is account support, not the tick. Details are in the Instagram blue tick guide.
How do I get the WhatsApp blue tick?
You need three things: a WhatsApp Business Platform (API/WABA) account, a Business Manager that has completed business verification, and third-party press coverage of your brand. The badge is free, but the BSP submission route has been suspended since August 2025, so many applications never enter review. Details are in the WhatsApp blue tick guide.
Are the green tick and the blue tick the same?
Yes. Meta unified the WhatsApp verification badge colour to blue. The mechanism did not change, accounts that already had a green tick turn blue on their own, with no reapplication and no fee.
Can I get verified on Facebook too?
Yes, through the same Meta Verified subscription as Instagram, and the two are usually cheaper bought together. That is a separate path from the WhatsApp business badge.
Do I need a blue tick to run Facebook ads?
No. Ads are published under a Facebook Page, and a Page does not need a verification badge to run ads. The two are unrelated.
Is it safe to buy an already-verified account?
No, and we do not sell them. For all three badges the verification is bound to the original person's identity or company, not to the account. Any event that triggers re-verification needs that original person, not you.
Will a blue tick increase my reach?
No. All three badges answer "is this really them", not a ranking question. Treating the fee as ad spend leads to disappointment.
What happens to Meta Verified if I stop paying?
The badge is removed. It is a subscription, not a one-time certification, which is the sharpest difference from the old free badges that were granted rather than rented.
